Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann), a gangly, pale-faced adolescent who negotiates the reefs and shoals of high school life with extreme caution. He belongs to no clique, tribe or faction but regards them all with an amiable neutrality. His only friend is Earl (R.J. Cyler), an African-American boy he’s known since they were six. They both avoid the school’s trouble centre, the cafeteria, preferring to eat lunch in the book-lined study of their equally genial history teacher. Otherwise, they spend their leisure hours making parodies of arthouse movies, with those by Werner Herzog as a particular favourites.
